Bible Journaling With Kids

Do you want your kids to be excited to learn from the Bible? Bible journaling with kids is an exciting way for them to memorize and interact with scripture. Kids reap so many benefits from Bible journaling and it’s really an enjoyable activity!  Bible journaling will encourage kids to spend time with the Lord.

As a kid, I remember having to memorize long portions from the Bible every summer. That was one of the required summer activities that my parents had us do yearly. Being a visual learner, it’d have been more beneficial for me if I had learned those verses through journaling.  Visual aids would have helped me with storing information longer.

HERE ARE SOME GREAT WAYS TO START BIBLE JOURNALING WITH YOUR KIDS.

WHY START BIBLE JOURNALING WITH YOUR KIDS?

  • It’s an excellent way to memorize scripture
  • Appeals to all types of learners
  • Kids can express themselves artistically
  • Excellent way to practice penmanship

WHAT IS BIBLE JOURNALING? DO YOU HAVE TO JOURNAL IN YOUR BIBLE?

Bible journaling is very popular now rightfully so. It is all about meditating on the Word and spending time with the Lord. It’s a beautiful way to absorb and store the Word in your heart.

Most people journal in their Bible but my kids don’t feel comfortable doodling in their Bible. So, they have a separate sketchbook (with lines and blank space) where they journal. This is the sketchbook we use and love. But I’ve seen parents buy used Bibles from Thrift stores just for the kids to use for journaling. It’s really about your kids’ comfort level.

WHAT’S BEST THE AGE TO START BIBLE JOURNALING WITH KIDS?

There’s really no age. If your kids aren’t old enough to write yet, you could write the verse for them and they can draw or doodle. When my youngest was 4 I’d write the verse down for him and he’d doodle on the page. Then he’d tell me what his figures or doodle meant, and I’d label his drawings.

HOW DO WE JOURNAL? HOW TO DECIDE WHAT VERSES TO USE?

You can write down a verse that stood out from your devotion, a favorite verse or a verse that teaches or talks about a particular character issue. You can also focus on a significant word from a particular verse. For example, Ephesians 2: 8-9 says; For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. The word that stands out in this verse is Grace. So you can just focus on the word ‘Grace’ and have the kids illustrate how ‘Grace’ looks like.

MATERIALS TO USE:

Here are some options:

  • Watercolor
  • Paint
  • Crayons
  • Markers
  • Gel pens
  • Stickers
  • Stencils
  • Coloring pages
  • Scrapbook Paper
  • Sketchbook
  • Bible

If your kids have trouble drawing, you can use stickers, stamps, and stencils or print out coloring pages and trace the image. Or they can cut out images and paste it. Or use a combination of all these.

The main goal of Bible journaling with kids is to understand and create a visual memory of the Bible verses.

And not all verses will yield to pictures, so just a myriad of colors on the page will do. It’s really up to the child and their creative direction.

We usually like to journal during our morning devotion. After we read a portion and discuss it, we all sit down with our Bibles and journals and start creating with our favorite verse from the reading. I really love this time in the morning with the boys.
